Re-boring a barrel, who do you recommend these days?

Cliff LaBounty's successor in the barrel reboring business is Delta Gun Shop, anyone have one done by the new folks?

I've got a 30-30 I want to make into a 38-55.

Michael:

Dan Pedersen did a very nice job for me reboring a .22 Hornet to .32 H&R. The rifle was a Browning Lo-wall.

His web site is: http://www.cutrifle.com/

I just received a new barrel from Delta - not a rebore. You know my bad vision, but it looks great to me!

I recommend Clearwater Reboring ( I think it's also Delta Gunshop) very highly. They did a 35WCF for me a couple years ago, and the results are superb.

I had JES Reboring do a 303 Martini sporter bbl out to 35cal on a 303 case. Excellent work to my eye and the turn around was 2 weeks. Had that done about a year ago, maybe a little more.
He only needed the bbl sent to him for the work. I took the full length rib off to make it easier to work on which he said he appreciated but could have done it w/o. It needed to be relayed anyway.

I had Clearwater (Jim DuBell) do a couple of rebore jobs on revolver bbls for me and the work was excellent. The turnaround was much slower (6/8 months) but that is a common time frame in that part of the trade from what I can gather.
Jim does the rebore work for Hamilton Bowen's pistol conversions.

When I had Cliff La Bounty do a rebore for me about 10 years ago it took about 18 months so things are getting better.

My problem lies in reconciling my gross habits with my net income.

From what I can gather, a lot depends upon just how many similar-size jobs he has waiting. Machine re-setup is time consuming and AFAIK most reborers have waited until they had enough jobs of a certain size to make the lost time economical. For instance I used to use Bob Snapp and have always been super-satisfied with the results, but if I sent him more than one size job it always took a lot longer. 3 or 4 rifles all to the same bore size took less than a year but the same 3 or 4 rifles to 2 different bore sizes always took a lot longer.
Regards, Joe

Thanks for all the input, I'll follow up and see what's out there.

The next question that comes up is there are the old case length 38-55's, the newer, shorter one. Today about all the flat-nose bullets are .375". The older 38-55's were .378-80". Now if I, or the next owner, wanted to shoot jacketed bullets it would make sense to have a .375" bore?

Comments?
