I have a #3 Ruger carbine in 45-70. Drops deer like a sledge hammer. I bought it for bear of all species. I use the special section for Rugers in the loading manuals. If you get it in 45-70 make sure the gun has enough weight. Recoil from my #3 carbine with full power loads is murder.

If you are shooting in a thick woodlot, wouldn't a double in 44 magnum be about perfect for deer and hogs out to 75 yards, or so, and trump everything else mentioned in reloading costs?
Just wondering.

I'm with Mike Petrov; the .30-40 has all the power you'll need and also all the range. You can handload it from .32ACP power to .308WCF power in a strong rifle.

The only concern I'd have is the seasonal availability of loaded ammo; the manufacturers seem to make one "run" of .30-40 a year now. But if you handload, cases seem to be available all the time. And you have a WIDE choice of bullets! Plinkers, match grade, high sectional density/deep penetration, non-lead.....you name it, .308 has got it.

Dan,

In a double the .303 British regulated for the 215 gr. bullet might do the entire range of North American deer/hogs.

Brass is plentiful.

.333 Jeffery Flanged. It has the history of a British double rifle caliber. Kynoch and Bertram both make the brass and Kynoch manufactures factory loaded ammunition. It is the equivalent of the modern .338-06.

The .348 WCF would be a great choice for North American game. Many years ago I examined a beautiful Francotte double rifle in .348 WCF at Randy Shuman's in Newville, PA. Couldn't quite go the asking price to add it to my collection of Winchester Model 71s.

My collection of .348 WCF ammo --

I agree. .348 Winchester. Big bore (relatively speaking), fairly low pressure and will handle anything on this continent.

I'm really disappointed that no one has agreed with me yet. I thought the .333 Jeffery was a brilliant idea. wink
