I appreciate your comments about jOe and completely agree. I get a little bothered sometimes when he lays the "truth" on some unsuspecting newbie inquiring about his beloved grandads hardware store gun, he's often brutally honest.
As far as the dark wood is concerned, try the acetone soak/Tru-Oil refinish, it's easy to do and you'll be glad you did, the wood will be beautiful (even jOe may like it).
