GJW,As recommended by others,Use Johnsons paste wax or boiled linseed oil for the barrel exterior.Stay away from other oils as it is possible that they contain some form of rust inhibitor.This being the case it could/dose result in lifting of the barrel finish.

Armor All came out with a spray on wax that contains carnauba wax and a polymer. It is called ICE and it does a wonderful job on my Austin Healey. It is easy to put on and looks great. It might be something to consider. You just spray it on from it's bottle and then wipe it off with a microfiber cloth.

Flitz has their own specially formulated "gun wax" they sell for just this purpose and it works well. However; I think any good hard wax such as Johnsons would be just fine. I tend to stay away fron using any oil on the exterior of my firearms as I believe it attracts dust.

TruOil will soften when the barrels get hot. Trust me as I've done this!
Tung Oil is a good protector for Damascus barrels.

I've always used Renaissance wax and sometimes still do. However, last year I tried out EEZOX and they seem to like that as well.

I use Meguires wax on my Mercedes. Is this going to work on my Remington damascus as well or are we talking different types of wax?

Wax is pretty well wax. I waxed a Colt Python and it stayed fingerprint free for at least ten years. I think any kind of wax works as a moisture barrier. Look for "Carnuba".
