A total of 3,355 Trap grades were sold between 1913 and 1939......your serial appears to be from the overlap year of 1918........

There are no LC Smith serial numbers beginning with an "O" prefix; so the first thing you would require in order to determine a production era and begin an accurate grade determination is a complete serial number. As to the word "TRAP", yes Hunter cataloged a "Trap Grade" beginning in 1913; however, many of the early Syracuse, NY and early Fulton, NY Smith guns are fitted with butt plates marked "Trap" or "Trap Grade" and are misidentified as an LC Smith "Trap Gun" by sellers. These Smith guns differ greatly from the later post-13 Trap Grades; so a complete serial number will ID the correct production period. And one other thing to look for that will ID a post-13 Trap Grade Smith gun would be to check the top of the barrel tubes; post-13 guns will be roll-stamped "Trap Grade" atop the right barrel.

I am having a hard time giving up on Doug's gun. Doug, do you have a Cody or LCSCA letter on that gun? Maybe you could share it with us.

Murphy, Yes, I have a Cody letter on this gun as follows:

The original manufacturer's data for the serial number 346xxx, as extracted from the original L.C. Smith records housed in this museum, are as follows:

Shotgun
Trap Grade
12 Gauge
Barrel Length: 30 inches
Date Shipped: April 4, 1914
Inspector Code: P

No other information is available for this serial number.
---
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This gun is a second year Trap Grade and appears to have been engraved by the paramount Hunter Arms master engraver Albert E. Kraus. Other Trap Grades that I have worked on and viewed do not have the engraving detail and depth that this gun has. It does stand out in a crowd for detail. The gun has not been modified and shoots like a dream. 7/8 oz. hand loads.

Thank You and Best Regards,

Doug
