For that matter look at the difference in the detail of engraving on the sidelock:

Another observation.

If you notice how much heavier the Hallowell gun is in the fences you will start to understand the difference between a light proof gun - 2 1/2", 1 1/8 oz. and a heavier proof gun - 2 3/4", 1 1/4 oz. And slso, the Hallowell gun has side clips and a third fastener.

You are right. The scroll on the older Purdey is much nicer. I just wish the gun I am looking at had the original 2 1/2" chambers. The more I think about it the more it bothers me. I do not know why.

Now you have me thinking. Maybe I should start looking for a mint condition original early Purdey. I do like them better than the newer guns.

Looks like a nice gun. Are the 'Whitworth' barrels original on Purdys ?
What's the reproof on the gun and when ?

Quote :

Purdey Ser. No. 18561
12 Ga. 2 3/4" Reproof- Sir Joseph Whitworth 30" Fluid Steel Barrels choked .008" and .033".
Gun built in 1905- A very nice Purdey to shoot.

Yes, Purdey used Whitworth Steel. I think, according to the Donald Dallas Book (my favorite book on Purdeys), they were the first to use Whitworth steel for barrels. If I'm wrong, Im sure someone will correct me.

You'd think a guy trying to sell a $15,000 Purdy would post barrel and stock dimensions on the website.

Someone just provided me with information on another early Purdey. The gun has the original 2 1/2" chambers but in 1959 got new barrels from Purdey. In addition the gun was "internally restored" by David Yale in 2003. How does a new set of barrels affect the value and what does "internally restored" mean?

Thanks.

Only the owner and David Yale can answer the question of what was done.
