I don't think oil actually "attracts" grit, but is certainly prone to capturing grit. Wax, on the other hand, forms a hard "shell" that will abrade away, but provides both corrosion protection and abrasion protection while in place.

Rocketman:
We have a special class of airborne grit here in Arizona. That's one of the reasons most of the world wide manufacturers stress test their automobiles here. It is composed of fine particulates that get into everything. You're going to have to trust me when I state you don't want to oil the exteriors of your firearms.

Jim, I have no doubt that oil in not the smart choice for AZ. Oil + grit = lapping compound. I only object, technically, to the word "attract." Imbed, capture, retain, etc. Oil doesn't "suck" grit out of the air. However, when the grit comes in contact with the oil, it stays with the oil. Technically, this has to do with "wetting" and surface tension. Wax, on the other hand, is a solid, and a fairly hard one at that, and generally does not retain the grit.

I would guess in Arizona one does not need either oil or wax on their guns to protect finishes. It's really dry there. Neither would seem best.
