Thanks Jim. I think I'll use the FFFg in a .410 just to be on the safe side.

Jim, I agree with all you said. I also add that as we progress, we learn many things that we used to do, we no longer do because of safety. We have learned that tobacco is not healthy, washing our hands is healthy. No one used to wear seat belts and now it is the law. Life jackets have saved many lives, but there was a time that many would not wear them. Asbestos was good to use as roofing and siding and lead was good in paint and in our gasoline, now we have learned that they can cause cancer and other health issues. All these things, along with sticking your lips around the muzzle of a gun can be argued. But, now that I know better, I have chosen to not attempt fate and die by these things and others, I didn't mention. Like seat belts, if you choose not to wear one and get injured or die during an accident, the law you ignored, was but there to protect you. If you go to an NMLRA event and choose to blow down the barrel, they will ask you to stop, it is against the rules, they are only trying to protect you. People aren't trying to upset your sense of a good time, they are trying to make sure everyone has a safe good time.

Regarding FFFg vs. FFg: Both were used "in the day," in shotguns and still are today. The finer grade produces a somewhat higher peak pressure, all else equal.

Comparing published data for 12 ga loads shows that 3 drams of FFg produces 4500 - 4900 psi with 1 1/8 oz shot (3 sources). FFFg creates a peak of of 6900 psi BUT with a 4 dram load (I don't have a 3 dram comparison at hand, source is David Butler, former W-W engineering manager).

However, Sherman Bell also tested (recently) 3 3/4 dram FFg under 1 1/4 ozs of shot (close to the 4 drams cited above but with 1/8 oz more shot) and found a 5900 psi peak -- 1000 psi below the FFFg 4 dram load with 1/8 oz less shot.

I tried his wad recomendations in two guns one was a 13ga. William Powell and the other was a 10ga. W & C Scott. I did allot of patterning tests with both guns and got the best results with the full cushion wad over the Nitro card.

I like 1F in a 10 muzzle loader and 2FF in a 10 cartridge and a 12 ga. muzzle loader.

Trouble with blowing down the muzzle is the other barrel ....

I don't have a ML gun, but do have rifles, revolvers, and pistols. I've never had a misfire with BP or Pyrodex other than a revolver that didn't swat the cap hard enough to set off the cap.
