Hi all, I was out with my son shooting a new SxS and noticed the primer in the right bbl was not as it should be. It does not do this all the time, maybe 6 out of 10. The other primers are ok. This only happened in the right bbl. I looked at the firing pins and they are the same length and are ok.

So................what do you think is causing this? Here's pic:

BTW, that's my daughter holding the hulls...Not me!!

Thanks so much!!

Greg

Hi all, the firing pins did not pierce the primer, I did clean up the base for a better look. Looks like the firing pin depth is the same for both bbls. Just trying to see what's going on. Here's a pic of the cleaned up base:

Thanks again!

Greg

Greg, Are these re-loads? Those are Cheddite hulls, and if factory, the Cheddite primers act different to different guns as to depth.

Cheddite primers, which those look like, "age harden" really fast....they act different in different guns......a normal deep strike usually appears as a light strike with old Cheddite primers.........punch them out, reload and test the gun with fresh U.S. made primers....should be fine......

Those are 2.5" Cheddite 16 hulls with what appears to be factory Cheddite primers that come with the new hulls.....I don't see any pressure signs or flatened primers, just hardened primers failing......dishing around the pins......use U.S. made primers........

Best,

Doug

I would suspect that the problem lies with that batch of primers. Lagopus.....

How did you determine them to be 'not pierced'?

It looks to me like they are in fact pierced, the left one having visible pin holes and the right one having the plating burned off the metal.

Look how much metal the pin is moving on an already paper thin primer cup. The metal displaces, and gets thinner from stretching. It then perforates.

Some people love Cheddite primers though.

Sure look pierced to me, and the powder markings before you cleaned them up seems to confirm that. I suspect you have a sharp spot on that firing pin. I have no experience with Cheddite primers so can't comment on that aspect. Only takes a very small pin prick to leak when the pressures inside are at 11,000psi.

I think the previous two posters have it right. There IS a puncture in the cup... or there would be no leakage. You may not be able to see it, but it's there.

Solution, try different primers if you reload. Federals or Remington seem less apt to pierce. If you buy ammunition, try a different brand.

I have never been a fan of Cheddite primers.

Greg
was there any powder residue, or smut etc around the firing pins holes on the breech face that would indicate some gas leakage ??
cheers
