James Kirk, Union Buildings, 36 Smith Street, Ayr From 1900 to around 1980. Was a "gunmaker" in as much he commissioned gun built with his name on . I have seen a number of examples most of which were well finished guns of mid quality. Thank You gunman

I come across Kirk guns from time to time. He also retailed cartridges with the names of The Champion, The High Velocity, The Marksman and The Land of Burns making reference to poet Robert Burns who was an Ayrshire lad. All the ones I have seen seem to have originated in the Birmingham Trade.
I have him at Union Buildings, 36, Smith Street, Ayr from 1900 to 1905 then at 46, Smith Street until around 1940 later moving to 25, Kyle Street then last known trading as James Kirk Tackle & Guns from 1984 to 1988. Lagopus.....

James Kirk, in Ayr, seems to be more of a retailer than a gunmaker. I have a very nice James Kirk, SLE, quite finely engraved, that I hunt with quite a bit. It appears to have Birmingham origins. I have also seen a Kirk marked boxlock from Belgium in a recent auction. His business seems to have been in the entire sporting goods line.

Thanks Daryl, the example I am looking at is a 16 bore SLE and it looks like a better than average piece of work. Mike
