A barrel that doesn't ring doesn't always have a loose rib. The extractors or sling swivel or other attached pieces can keep it from ringing.
I am always suspicious of barrels that don't ring.

well old ed landers says to tap the barrel with a brass rod to see if it rings like a bell to check for lose ribs.

Yeah, but if you're not looking for a life-long commitment, I'll take a hookder with makeup any day! Don't think I'd want that shotgun, however. That's a case where a couple of six-packs don't improve the looks.
