I don't own an HE Fox, however, it was my understanding that barrel wall thickness is one of the criteria for compatibility with steel or tungsten (hevi) shot. How thick are the barrels on these HEs, for example, in the choke section?

If I'm out with the NID mag ten, a big Parker, or an HE, I find that I don't have to kill as many fowl to bring a smile to my face. One outrageous long kill with a big gun is more fun than a limit with an 870 or a Benelli. One could apply this general standard to shooting hammer guns as well. And many other types of guns too I'm sure.

Happiness is folding a snow goose at 50 yds with a Greener single 10 ga.3 1/2" magnum circa 1885 with a 40" barrel.... 1 1/2 oz. buffered #2 Bismuth seems to do the job.

Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought stupid, than open it and confirm.

While I own a nice 32" three-inch chambered HE, there is no advantage when using it over other well made 3" twelves. There is, however, no handicap, either.
I can actually kill more ducks with less misses with my black 390, but I don't hunt ducks for a living, I do it to BE living. In a way, I feel like I owe the men who built my HE a certain amount of time hunting with it every year, and I do it gladly. The 390 is a killing machine, but it has no "soul", no history and no charm.
eightbore knows what I mean, I can tell by what he writes, and others here. The HE and I are just........... comfortable together.
Thanks again, Bobby.

Borrowed an HE to have a "Bo Whoop" experience. Sitting in the breaking dawn and listening to the turkey talk with the 9 lb. HE across my legs is a cherished memory. Once the toms hit the ground, I hit the Ashby box call and they came running. Three toms bottomed out in the ravine giving me coverage to settle into the heft of the big Fox. The Super X #4's roared in the morning stillness. Flapping wings of the dying bird competed with echoing report and my Mr. Buck experience was over. At 30 paces the nice tom slammed into the wall of 1 1/4oz of 4's as his outstretched head appeared coming out of the valley, seeking the likes of a perky lady. Proud to carry the heavy bird, balanced with the heavy Fox in the other and headed off the ridge. Randy ...

Interesting thread. Just some random thoughts on Super Foxes and loads.....
Sometimes gents will discount 2-3/4" chambered Super Foxes, in favor of original 3-inch chambered guns. One consideration often not understood is that the Super X 3-inch load developed for Super Foxes, contained 1-3/8 ounces of shot. The regular Super X 2-3/4" load was 1-1/4 ounce. That's a measly 1/8 ounce extra in the 3-incher, equating to about 17 extra pellets with #4 shot, and 11 with #2's. And, while I understand that every extra pellet has to go somewhere when the gun goes bang, with equivalent choking that extra 1/8 ounce isn't giving anything like an extra 10 yard advantage in favor of the 3-incher.
If you want to get a significant advantage over 1-1/4 ounces with 2-3/4" Super X's, you'll have to go to the 1-5/8 ounce 2-7/8" 10 gauge that was introduced with the Ithaca NID Super 10's.
Anyone wanting to dump nice original 2-3/4" HE's/Super Foxes, please contact me. $10. to Dave for any purchased by means of this post.
Shoot modern 12 gauge 1-7/8 ouncers in a 3-inch Super Fox when hunting turkeys or predators? I don't think so..... Silvers

Frank is right about the 2 3/4" HE but Buckingham interest and fashion dictate the 3" HE in 32" is the one to have. Bismuth makes a nice 2 3/4" 1 3/4oz #4 load that works well in any HE. (the ducks, even at Beaver Dam don't know it's not a 3" shell, really, I asked a dying gadwall there one time..) Actually, the "best buy" in classic waterfowling 3" doubles is without question, the L.C. Smith Wild Fowl/Long Range in a 30" field grade. I've seen them languishing at gunshows for $1500...just check for the factory 3 in. chamber marking in an oval on the flats and the reinforced short rib. It will do anything an HE will do but they are a bit more fragile in the stock area and a pound+ lighter.
I am off to Argentina for the last week of duck season next week and I am bringing a 32" M21 3" 12g Duck and a 30" M21 3" 20ga Magnum both f/f with splinter/straight grips with an extra set of open 28" barrels (fo' dem teals")...and just to set the record straight, I have never been to a Metallica, KISS or Whitesnake concert...

A Motley Crue fan - I knew it!
Thanks for the info.
And if you ever get the chance to see Metallica, do it.
