This gun is listed as a 12 ga. but is surrounded by 20 ga. shells. Also, the ad says 2 3/4" chambers, but it is apparently marked 2 1/2? Am I missing something here?

Barrel flats say its a 12ga. The seller is a pretty knowlegdeable guy so if he says the chambers are 2.75 they probably are and the gun's out of proof...Geo

Yup, we rednecks don't buy guns by their markings. We use these micrometer things to establish actual chamber and bore dimensions. British proof marks don't "prove" anything, except to a Brit.

That gun has undergone at least one reproof, when it picked up the "tons" marks. If it's now 2 3/4", that change apparently was made since reproof--which does indeed mean the gun's no longer in proof.

The value of the proofmarks is that it tells you how the gun came from the factory, and what "official" modifications have been made. But as eightbore says, that does not mean you do not verify with a bore and choke gauge, chamber gauge, etc--because it may well have been tampered with since original proof or reproof, as this one apparently has.

I'd be more worried about the big gaps in the braze on the lumps . May be OK but would want a careful check before buying. If it is 2&3/4" then it has had the chambers lengthened since it's reproof. That would make it out of proof in a CPI country ,the US is not a member so proof has no real meaning other than for your own satisfaction.

Eightbore, British proof marks don't prove anything to us either until we have checked the dimensions are as stated. Not wise to buy a pig in a poke. As stated, there is no real official colour coding to British and Continental cartridges and 12 bore cartridges will come in all colours. Lagopus.....

Yes, don't buy pig in a poke especially if it is grossly overpriced like what we see above. On the other hand if that Galand was available at local shot I would buy it tomorrow.

Well, this seller is from Kansas. Even if he had English shells, why put something confusing in an ad? They look 20ish to me.

If the chamber was bored out, looks like he should have mentioned it. I would think the guy knows the difference.

The gun didn't sell, only got a few looks.

I have brought several guns from him here in Kansas and all were what he described. He does ask more than I would on the gun, but I am sure if he says 2 3/4 he has checked the chambers with a gauge as I know he has them.

That said he lists a lot of guns and does not sell them very quickly because of his prices. At least that is my two cents.
