Yeah, you did. These shells are very old Winchester/Western red paper 12Ga. shells that have faded with age.

Why, I believe you're right. I've never seen a red paper shell turn yellow, but apparently that's what happened.

Don is correct,I personally have a number of these faded 12-bore cartridges and use a few occasionally for photographic purposes; must have been something with the red dye solution used on paper during this era.

To me, it looks like a nice $2k hunting gun that is "out of proof." But does one really worry much about the chambers having been lengthened 1/4"? I wouldn't.

I've never bought anything from this seller. He seems to have some nice shotguns, but he prices them at about 200% of market value. However, I would emphasize that it is clearly within his perogative to do so.

The only issue with chambers lengthened and not reproofed since is the fact that far more Americans today are wise to proof and its implications. It would not necessarily worry me either if I were a buyer, but I'd certainly use its out of proof status to try to negotiate a lower price.

If he starts at say $1200+/-200 he may actually sell that gun.
