IIRC, either she's from Dresden or she went to University there. But, definitely an Ossi.
To correct myself, thanks to German Wikipedia:
She was born in Hamburg but grew up in the East and went to Uni in Leipzig. Her (second) husband (a quantum chemistry/physics professor) was born in a tiny town called Hosena in the far eastern part of the old East Germany, northeast of Dresden and southwest of Cottbus. Suhl is in what was the far southwestern corner of the old DDR. I think it's probably unlikely he's from the gunmaking Sauer family. According to his German wikipedia entry, he seems a serious academic and keeps his private life private and only grants interviews when they pertain to his academic work.
