I had a friend that worked night shift at an electroplating shop. During the slow times they would screw around a plate(gold, silver, chrome) about anything metal they could get their hands on. Tools, knives, car parts, lots of coins. Can't remember if he ever talked about doing guns but I'm sure they did.

Look on the practical side ,no rust problems ,if shooting over salt marshes,etc. Not condoning this practice but I have seen a number of guns that have been plated both chrome and nickel ,for this reason. No stainless steel about in the old days and of course even 40 years back the gun would not of had the value it would today.
