Not necessary. We will be able to keep track of Chuck's pointers by the flushing birds.

I dunno, that picture of the new pup looks like it's pretty steady on the point.

Boy, that's a very nice looking pointer Chuck. I always like orange dogs with a dark nose and dark eyes. They always turned out to be good ones. I think Pointers can be good pheasant dogs but I think they need to be trained on pheasant. In fact, Robert Wehle had several pointers who won pheasant trials including the Nationals....Elhew Jungle, Elhew Marksman and Elhew Zeus. I did, however, have a pointer I felt pretty well broke on quail....well, I took him to Nort Dakota and he got in a 30 acre field of standing corn, started chasing, barking and I bet 500 pheasants flew out of that cornfield before I could catch this male pointer. He came totally UNGLUED. To say the least he was now unsteady and I had to totally rebreak this dog. Have fun with your new dog. Buzz

Too many birds at once can cause a stimulis overload. One time my flushing dog began acting birdy, but she couldn't seem to focus, next thing I knew about 50 pheasant flushed out of a nearby dried up cattail swamp.

Aw Buzz, you spoiled the surprise!

Actually my experience with pointing dogs is that after they have flushed and chased long enough they will start pointing out of desperation. I had a hard charging Brittany pup that chased wild Bobs for 7 hours before he gave up and started pointing. Turned out to be a great dog.

Of course he didn't have the range and speed of a an English Pointer so when he finally went on point he hadn't left the state.

Best,

Mike

Brought back good memories. I have midwest relatives that are big on flushing dogs for pheasant. I had so many comments after an hour in the field I decided to kennel my English Pointer, because she didn't hunt their way.

I only had about an hour alone with the pointer at the end of the day and she locked up just fine on a rooster. I just tipped it and it sailed off a couple hundred yards, but she found it again with a steady point. One of my good old days, more meaningful than spending time with many people.

She was pretty good on Texas bobwhites. When the counts were up, she'd hold point in the middle of big feeding coveys that were probably spread out over fifteen yards. A lot different though than figuring out a couple hundred running pheasant.

First field on the first hunt I took my Lab on was in SD. The dog took off right out of the truck flushing every rooster in the field while 20 not so pleased hunters watched. blush

Over the years since, she's made up for that with most of those hunters. Turned out to be a good pheasant dog and good at chukar and quail since thats most of what we hunt.

I expect what'll happen will be somethin 'tween Mike's story and my story. After a season on quail and chukar in CA, I think I'll have a dawg.
