in the context of this thread, the difference between what is right and what is wrong, should be determined by the guy paying for the work?

Ed, I have to disagree with the statement: “in the context of this thread, the difference between what is right and what is wrong should be determined by the guy paying for the work?” When a customer sends me work, there is a mutual understanding that the work will be done in a safe and correct manner.
The customer may or may not have a clue as to what is correct or how it’s done, but he relying on the professional’s training and experience to do it correctly.
There’s a quote that I’ve hijacked and often use as my tagline: “Amateurs practice until they get it right, Professionals practice until the cant get it wrong”

mike: safe, no question, i agree. correct? that is where we differ. as for your tag line, any true professional accepts the fact that he can not get it right every time. every now and then, even the best get it wrong. as long as you get it right most of the time, then you can call yourself a professional...have a nice day.

Why can't a true professional recognize that something is wrong and have the ability to address it. I think it's the amateur that has to give up. If a professional gets it right most of the time, then they may be able to move on to the next task more often than not and make a living at it.

i am a part time, hobby gun dealer. i specialize in antique and collectible firearms. i particularly like sxs shotguns. i use the services of a professional gunsmith. he has been working on guns as a full time profession since 1946. he has thousands of satisfied customers. many of those customers have had shotgun receiver case color enhancement work performed by this gentleman. he uses a low controlled heat and chemical process to cosmetically enhance shotgun receivers. over the years, i have had about 25 shotgun receivers case color enhanced via his method. most have been sold rather quickly. i have yet to have a return or a complaint. one cannot stay in business over 65 years and not be getting it right most of the time.

Ed if you want to bad mouth Parkers talk about their ejectors.
If you want to bad mouth the use of the bone charcoal method to re-case harden an old side by side action talk about warped receivers. Everything else you have been throwing at it is BS and everbody here (except you) knows it.
Best,
Mike
