Buy a quart of Mobil 1 0W20 synthetic motor oil. When you open it, smell it and see if it doesn't smell just like some expensive gun oils.

We've made cleaning a ritual. Before I got to the big cities, a rag soaked lightly with SAE No. 30 motor oil did the trick.

I'll not forget the late Ike Ellis, of Idaho Falls, Rexburg and Iona, Idaho, a top drawer stockmaker and gunsmith, used 30W motor oil (I don't remember the brand) as a preservative and on hinges and knuckles. Said he'd used it for decades, had yet to have it gum up or have a gun rust with it on it.

Varied answers as expected. Thank you all for your input I truly appreciate the responses.

OK, for the record I'm at 2 questions posted (and what I'm going to do)

1) Snap Caps:
Me: a-zoom

2) Oil/lube/preservative?
Me: I'm going to order a bottle of Eezox and test it on some steel I have that's sitting outside and see what happens. No rain involved in this test....it's Texas....it doesn't rain here anymore for some reason...so "on with the trial!"

Going to also order Balistol. The Eezox warnings of "don't use too much" have me wondering....

Having extra barrels of junkers lets one test & trial things. I highly recommend buying a couple of $20 trash barrels to see what happens with different chemicals as opposed to your multi-thousand $$ treasured gun.

All your inputs are appreciated boys, and keep 'em coming!

Buy some Clenzoil and you won't have to worry about how much to use. Good for outside, inside, hinge pin lube and no damage to wood.
Keep it simple.

I use both Ballistol and Clenzoil, too. Clenzoil MIGHT be a bit better than Ballistol as a lubricant, so I use it mainly for that purpose. For everything else, I use Ballistol.

Ballistol works well and it is relatively inexpensive. It is even more inexpensive when it is cut with water. When my bores are really dirty I spray a 1 to 10 Ballistol to water solution down the bores of my gun. (This is the same formulation that is recommended to clean corrossive primer fouling.) Followed by a good brushing this stuff really takes out "the crud". After drying my bores, I then continue the cleaning process with "straight" Ballistol.

My guns ared in pretty constant use so I do very little for "long-term storage" except to place muy guns in "gun socks". If I did, I would use RIG.

guys....do any of these products do a good job of displacing water in a rained-on action? I know WD40 is legend for that, but it has a bad repuration for gumming up actions.

Read up on EZZox web site. Regardless of what I use, if the action got wet; out comes the wife's hair dryer.
