I took the liberty of harvesting Roy Australia's image which is an excellent illustration (and refutation of the 'head's up' mythology) of the turn-of-the-century gun mount

Also Craig Bennett at The Southern

ROY: What is the DAH of your Greener? I'd be happy to attribute the image if you'd e-mail me at revdoc2@cox.net and thanks!

I'm betting DAH is closer to 2.5 than 3" on the Greener, Doc. As for Mr. Bennett, he's certainly M1 nose to thumb so, yeh, I'd say he's crawling forward. How exactly do the shooters of the Greener and the hammergun support a refutation of the headsup "myth?" I'd say Bennett is bringing a stretchy neck to a short LOP. Make that stock an inch longer and I see no reason why it wouldn't demand a more erect head. I'd have to say that some of your previous photographs (of "turn-or-the-century" trap shooters) do support the idea that the bullethead approach has been around for a long time (at least among trapshooters).

Posed 'head's up'

Sorta in between from The Gun and Its Development; 9th edition 1910

Guess Greener paid overtime to the sight-aligner guy shocked

Yeah I know... I set the range, on this one it was all crossers and outgoers. No real risk of clay coming at me.
The order was
1 x DB outgoer (high with slight R-L cross)
1 x DB Crosser R-L
1 x Report pair, outgoer on call, crosser on report.
2 x DB Battue R-L
1 x DB Super mino crosser L-R
7 Targets

"No real risk of clay coming to me."

There are other reasons that I carry shooting glasses at the range at all times, besides clay coming to me...
Once a shooting pal next to me received a piece of lead into his face from a steel plate 25 meters away; he visited doctors for quite some time afterwards...

With kind regards,
Jani

Fair call. I have the safety glasses, I probably should be better at wearing them.

Both guys look like they are scared to wrap their hands around the barrels ?

Joe, looks to me that Bennett has his thumb well up on the left barrel to break up possible off-eye dominance. Not like he's trying to chew belt from an M60 and needs to hold down the muzzle.
