I saw this article in the web posting of Field and Stream today. Hawkeye the Lab, loyal to his master till the end. If this is not a photo for our times, I don't know what is. Maybe someone who can highlight this article and post it here, would be appreciated. ".....Some gave all" Rest in peace soldier, and God Bless. Only in America. Randy

Randy, my prayer is that we live in times that don't produce these kinds of heart-breaking pictures of sacrifice and duty. They should not become photos of our times. Life should always be more precious than glory.

Life should always be more precious than glory. In an ideal world that would be nice. But throughout the ages, mankind has been at war, mostly over religion. I'd rather be a nation prepared, it will never be rainbows and unicrons

I have a deeper respect for dogs, and their loyalty to their master, as time goes by.
Several years ago my neighbor died and was buried in the cemetery at our little country church, between my house and his. His pet bulldog was lying on the fresh dirt of his grave the morning after the funeral when I drove by. I saw him lie there for three days until a family member came and took him to their home.
Dogs understand much more than we give them credit for, IMO.
Deeply touching photograph.

There are many famous accounts of dogs understanding the passing of their friends. There's one famous account of the dog seeming to not knowing and continuing to look for its owner. Hachiko, an Akita, came to his owner in 1924 and lost his owner in 1925. Apparently, his daily routine was to follow his owner to the train station every morning and greet him later in the day. One day, the owner died and didn't return. The dog continued to come to the station everyday at the time of the train arrival for nine years.

There are few things in life that compare with owning a loyal dog. I've been blessed with several great ones over the years. My current four-legged friend is a young two and a half year old Brittany named "Stash". He's always in the same room with me and is currently sound asleep next to me in bed with his head on my pillow.
I know some people who keep their hunting dogs locked in a pen for 20+ hours a day unless they're out hunting. That is no way to treat a dog in my opinion.
Those who treat their dogs that way cannot understand the difference between a "hunting dog" and a "hunting companion".
Some say a great hunting dog can't be a house pet. I'll take my house pet that knows how to hunt over a hunting dog that doesn't have the bond with his family.
The personality of the Brittany breed is a great desire to please it's owner. Mine pleases me everyday with a little doggie kiss on the cheek in the morning when he wakes me up and when he hops up on the bed at night and lays his head on my chest to get his ears rubbed.

This post is so heart rending. Read the story of Bedgellert and weep. I have three dogs, two who came to me after traumatic beginnings. Our family is tight knit and we ALL reap the rewards.I go to sleep and awake each day with a kiss, meaning that I also am loved.
