Hi folks, bugger I think is the word.

I want to put an extension on the second Grant and had a made cut some walnut I had to create the extension. Right at the end I realised that he had cut round the bottom not thinking of the continuing downward cast of the bottom of the stock. So I'm faced with the following:

As you can see the only way I can make this piece of wood work would be for it to be a butt extension like some guns have that doesn't continue the lower angle/taper of the stock. It would have to be set straight....

Was this done in the past? I remember seeing some guns like this but what is the view here? Will it look OK or should I start again with another piece of Walnut. It's a shame because this piece was the best of the bunch re fit/look.

Cheers

Do you need the entire thickness of the extension block in making the new dimentions.
If the thickness of the block is oversize, you can cut the butt stock back a bit more reducing the drop line. The block moves foreward then and perhaps can make up the difference both in thickness and also catch the straight toe line all the way through.

Your grain match might suffer doing this though..

Short of that,,a new piece of wood,
I don't think you want to be installing leather covered pads to make up the difference at the other end.

Yeah, that's what I thought....damn cross with myself for allowing that to happen! Oh well. Kutter, you might be right I don't think I need the whole thing...I'm getting the number one gun back tomorrow so will check what I need.

New piece of wood. You can always use this one for something else.

You should talk/email with Mark Larson about graining the wood to match.

Start over IMHO. A block of wood for an ext costs virtually nothing. Have you seen the gun art by Mark Larson, a member of our forum? He can blend where there is no seam. Fabulous work, to say the least. Take care, Tony.

Hi Buzz,

I'll contact Mark but him being in the States might be prohibitive.

Oi! Tony...I've done the same thing with at least one recoil pad..
You feel like a tool n then slap yourself & curse loudly.
I tried making do with the recoil pad, but it was on a lovely burl stocked Belgian Britte Gun,the wood looked like a storm map... so I did the right thing n did it proper job....It looked like crap even to my eyes, who were more forgiving than others...I'd start over mate...as the Guns are so nice
Hows the health man???
Best to you
cheers

Yeah. True. PA24. I'm getting the Evans re-stocked at the moment and I'm not running to another atm. smile I'll see how much shorter it is than the 1 gun (I don't think it's off by much) and either leave it or put a bit of wood on the end. Present point on re-cap taken but there are plenty of nice guns with a "wooden extension that isn't more than an inch long).

Franc, yeah, got it, OK I have another piece of wood. I'm OK health wise. I have another PET scan in the next 2 weeks and a review with my oncologist with the results on the 16th September. If there are any bad cells or anything nasty it should be small enough to RF they tell me...but it's still something I try not to think about, until the night of the 16th I suspect...
