The other post on a moisture liner for a safe got me thinking. What is the ideal humidity level inside a safe? It seems to me that too dry would be nearly as bad as too humid.

I try to keep it at 50% relative humidity. Over 55% rust can start, and much under 50% is not too good for wood. IMHO of couse.

With kind regards,

What Jani said.

If I can maintain the temperature at 68 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit and hold humidity levels between 50 to 55 percent my stuff is happy. These are the optimum levels for preservation IMHO.
Air circulation is very important as is consistency.

Gents,
Thanks for the input. 50-55% is higher than I wold have imagined. As far as circulation, how do you do this in an enclosed safe? Do you have a fan or something?

Phil,
I have a purpose built room with a vault door and power.

Not about guns and safes but some informed reading: http://cool.conservation-us.org/byauth/brownjp/humidity1997.html

Mostly what that article tells me is that getting the RH to a point LOW enough and long enough to do any damage is not gonna happen in about any home.
With properly finished and sealed wood you will be way hard pressed to even get close to too low a RH. Go for the gusto w/ the dehumidifiers - you ain't gonna hurt nothing.

have a day

I must be blessed, but that doesn't make sense. Anyway, I have NO humidity control in my safe, nor have I since I got it in 1995. I've NEVER had a problem with rust in any amount with my firearms, or with my knives, for that matter. I live in a small town in western Massachusetts with a definite 4 season climate.

A thread like this alway gets me thinking I should do something about it. Then I ususally open my safe and check some guns, etc. and close it up. NO RUST

I can't figure it out.

Not to be a wise-guy, but is rust that big of a problem in some of your safes?

What do you fellows generally do to combat it?

I have a goldenrod across the bottom in the rear, never had an issue, but also each gun is slathered in ballistol or lemonoil/beeswax,then placed into a soft slip cover.

I also noticed Irene left a half inch puddle around the base, itll still take 3" to breech the door, that was a bad one though, most times its just moistened concrete on the floor.

Its something to watch,Im quite vigilant the day after.

I appreciate all the input. I am more concerned about getting the humidity TOO low. I think I can keep it in 35 - 55/60% range without doing anything. Sounds like I should be fine.
