Recently bought a older 20 ga. sxs boxlock. 28" barrels Mod. & Full. Marked as follows Mercury Magnum Model G2028, S/N 102XX, G, LIG.
Smooth mirror barrels, good blue, nice wood, no cracks. Shot 100 rounds this past weekend. Seems to be in good mechanical condition. The double triggers are 3-3/4 and 4-1/4.
Referencing the Terry Wieland book, "Spanish Best" I identified the following marks. Page 316 marking #18, marks used from Dec. 14, 1929- July 9, 1931. Page 317, #21 and page 317 #25.
Interesting that proof marks #18 and 21 are between the dates Dec. 14, 1929 and July 09, 1931. Proof marks #22 and 25 are since July 9, 1931.
Would anyone know who the Spanish Mfg. was?

You are off on the dates. The date code on the barrel flats will be a letter and a number like G.1=1970. In 1970 the gun listed for $134.50

Here is the info. You can also find the maker's marks on the barrel flats. If you pust forward on the front trigger, it should move; hinghed trigger.

The LIG is the extinguished Spanish gunmaker Industrial Guipuzcoana, Elgoibar, Spain.

"Spanish Best" date codes indicate "G" being manufactured in 1934.

Without referencing anything, I would guess you are off on the dates as well. I bought a new "Mercury" 20 in about 1960 for about 100 bucks, that sounds like your description. Wasnt a ery good gun as I remember it..

The letter "G" is not followed by a number. Just a space then the s/n. I will try to find a date of mfg. for LIG.

Wasn't Mercury the brand imported in the '50's - '70's by Tradewinds of Tacoma WA? They were also the importer for Husqvarna rifles.

Correct. Sometimes those numbers aren't stamped good. There would also be a dot between the number and letter. Look for a dot; the number may be very very faint or forgot to be added. Post a pic of the gun.

should be a good shooter...watch out for soft sears, a common failing of spanish guns of that era. however, a good shotgun smith can harden them for you, when needed.

La Industria Guizpucoana was a retailer rather than a maker (like Trust Eibarres, or Orvis here in the US). I have an LIG that was made by Gregorio San Martin, and other makers have been noted. Check the gun's water table and barrel flats for the maker's marks to determine the maker of this specifc gun.
