Eric, as Dustin says the button is on both sides, but with the Idéal you don't need to
use it. I have read somewhere that the first models didn't even have a safety.

What you do (with care and practice) is load the gun and close it with the lever and
triggers depressed; then, without letting go the triggers you gently release the lever, thus the hammers are NOT ARMED. You can carry the gun in this state, and as you mount it to shoot you pull the lever arming the hammers and having the gun ready to fire by the time you have shouldered it. A lot safer than carrying a closed gun with
cocked hammers and only a safety that all it does is avoid the triggers to move
(unless you have intercepting sears). JMTC
