Where can one buy the sling swivel studs which consist of machine screw stud which passes through the stock forend and screws into a barrel band?

Sometimes there is no barrel band. Only a tapped lug fixed to the bottom of the barrel. Is the lug brazed on?

Finally, does the added attachment hurt or enhance accuracy? Is it sort of like backwards forend tip pressure?

Thanks. I see the barrel band type that goes ahead of wood on their website but, I want one similar to this Sedgley:

You're not going to find that for sale. It could be fabricated by a metalsmith, but it's not an off the shelf item. You might finds something semi-close in the Recknagel catalog (large German operation) - available through NECG. And that stud requires what are referred to as Super Grade swivels, which are also a little hard to find. Good luck.

The Sedgley and many other prewar US sporters used the larger snap swivels that were also used on the earlier Winchester Super Grade rifles. The modern smaller-size Michaels, Recknagel and others are miniatures of the original SG style.

Here's a photo illustrating the difference.

The early SG swivel is the one in the middle while the later Michaels type is one the viewer's right. The left-side one is a military model that can be used on the SG-size swivel bases. Most of the other artifacts shown are bench-made items.

I have used SMLE No1 MkIII Rifle 'inside barrel band' for such swivel bands as on the Sedgley.
They were cheap(!), already had a lug on the bottom with a hole in it & tapped. Though I usually ended up retapping it to a common size for my shop made swivel stud that screwed into it from the outside, bottom of the forend.

They are approx .700"+ ID,,so that may limit it's application.
The SMLE bbl is quite a slim taper.
But I found a use for them on many occasions on projects I was working on.

The band wall thickness varys a bit between .060 & .070 IIRC, War time mfg and all that.
There is a very slight taper to the hole,,not much,,a couple .000" at most. Maybe that's just from crush fit on the rifles. They may have been made a straight bore.

It takes some work to fit it to a tapered barrel (if the already .700" dia is usable) and then file up the band to taper it up to the edges, etc.

Make a swivel stud to screw into the band, threads to match, with a shoulder to draw against the wood. Make the head any size you like to match your TD swivel.

You can still get the SMLE inner band from MilSurp parts dealers.
A large flat headed screw is what engages the band in the original SMLE from the bottom and the band is hidden by the forward handguard.

(I don't think the band is a part found on the later #4 SMLE,,I had no interest in those!,,Just the WW1 No1MkIII rifle.)
Saves a lot of work making one up to this point,,but there's still fitting to be done. You'd have to do that anyway.

Right from the parts box of rare & unusual items...

Can anyone tell me where to obtain an off the shelf barrel swivel base - the concave type that fits on the bottom of the barrel rather than a barrel band? Thanks.

Recknagel should have you covered there - NECG's website shows several, and Recknagel's actual catalog shows many more varieties. It's worth the trouble to try to get a copy of their paper catalog - takes a couple of weeks of emails and shipment time from Germany, or it did for me.

Thanks. I had looked there and was unable to find any that appeared to have the concave base and din't have screw holes.
