Tony, I really like that gun and it's condition is quite good for that age. It appears to have original finishes. If so, I would have to think long and hard about refinishing it. It seems to have some good stories to tell the way it is.

Nice gun Tony. I would like to see a pic of the breech face without the barrels on.

I'll ask Westley if it was a pinfire. I see what you mean about the dovetails.

Daryl, point taken, but that's why I buy guys so that I can try and get them back to where they began looks wise. I'll try to be sympathetic with it.

JRB. will take a photo and post it for you.

Don't think so, Tony. The dovetails are the ancestors to disc set strikers. They are there to be replaced over time because of primer induced breech corrosion.
Some people (Woodward, I believe, Westley maybe) had an horizontal dovetail across the breech face covering both strikers.
The breech face will tell the picture.
Best regards,
WC

It does look quite good for age. I am sure you will do it justice Tony.

Tony,Your Westley gun is not a pinfire conversion it is a very early centerfire gun!W.W.Greener in his book,"Modern Breech loaders",page 12,pictures the Westley Richards patent striker as seen on your gun.W.W.G.makes the following observation;"The striker is made in two pieces, working at different angles. The top striker receives the blow from a hammer like that of a pin cartridge, and communicates it to the bottom striker. There is no spring;the explosion of the cartridge forces it back. The weapon has very much the appearanceof a pin gun."
Stonehenge[J.H.Walsh] in his book,'British Rural Sports,"pages 35-37 pictures this gun and provides a review of its merits.
Nice aquisition I look forward to seeing your restoration of same.
