For some God-knows-what reason, we suddenly receive the Outdoor channel. Never had it before, nefver signed up for it. Two days ago poof! There it was.

About 3 minutes of watching made me wonder if they ever showed anything that would be of interest to me. Or just plain anything of interest.

Can anybody out there clue me in on what to watch, when, etc?

Or else tell me not to bother at all, so I don't keep "huntin' and peckin'"

Many Thanks - Marc

Marc, till this summer I was paying $3.00 per month for it. Wasn't even worth that so it's now disconnected. I never found anything that perked my interest. I mean, how many deer or turkeys do you want to see killed! They used to have some upland bird shows but guess they were too expensive to make, etc.

When we first got satellite TV several years ago I subscribed for a short time but dropped it after I found very little of interest to me. Whack 'em and stack 'em isn't my thing.

And most all the hunts are not what I and most consider fair chase methods.

I have been a field producer for both Bass Pro Shops and Bowhunter Magazine's TV shows, both of which used to run on the Outdoor Channel. I can guarantee that both of those shows strictly engage in legal and ethical, fair chase hunts. That said, neither of those shows would have much appeal for a double gun enthusiast. Most hunting television will have stand hunting for deer, calling in Spring turkeys and a mix of adventure hunts such as Alaska moose, bear, sheep, and African hunts. Stand hunting for deer and calling turkeys have a far higher success rate than a lot of other hunting styles and for economic reason will be a big part of the programming mix. Another reason is that the vast majority of hunters in this country engage in deer and turkey hunting east of the Mississippi. Ruffed Grouse or Woodcock hunting would be extremely difficult to shoot under most circumstances.

" Ruffed Grouse or Woodcock hunting would be extremely difficult to shoot under most circumstances".
This may be an indicator of how poor the programme producers may be at the subject matter.
The word you were looking for Sir was 'film'.
I can assure you that the birds are not extremely difficult to shoot.
I think the real issue with countrysports channels is that you are pleasing hundreds of people whilst millions are turning over or off.

Rather than be a "sofa spud", watching some boob in a deer stand whispering nonsense, I would rather pick up my shotgun, rifle, fishing rod, or whatever and get my butt out of the house. laugh

What little upland hunting I see on TV is all canned hunts or drive and block stuff.

Real easy to film a deer or turkey out of an out'house blind...(which they sell and promote)

It's my opinion the out'house blinds are unethical when used on turkeys.

Reason being the turkeys defense system is totally shut down and turkey hunting then becomes just turkey shooting and offers no real sport.

Hunting is about sport and the big business companies (like Bass Pro) are taking the sport right out of hunting...

It started years ago with the fancy bows then it moved to fancy muzzleloaders then on to the safety of out'house blinds where you can't even see the sky, game feeders for sale that are technically illegal to use in most states they are sold in, game cameras so we can know what's out there...the list goes on.

I hate to say it but we need regulations outlawing most of what they are pushing on the hunting world.

Game and Fish commissions across the country wonder why hunters numbers have dropped....I blame it in part on lack of interest because of lack of sport.
