I tought I taw a tutty-seven? I did, I did! A graded Ithaca is a joyful thing. Bravura engraving. Sprezzatura checkering. Black walnetto that is consistently F L A S H Y and was generally dry when inletted (which is more than I can say for some Fox guns). The big clunky action bars are the artiste's canvas! Like Gully Jimpson said (or should have): "Give me a big wall!"

Doug...any rebuttal?

I had a circa 1909 #3 with setter, pointer and grouse engraved that actually looked like they should...I have seen and own some Ithaca guns that look as poor as Parkers engraving though too.

My first double was a Flues Field grade 16ga....it was made in 1924 and locked up as tight as any gun I have ever held.

And I do not think anyone put better wood for the price on guns than Ithaca...and I stand behind the decision to use black walnut as well, they put out a lot of amazing wood.

Best,
Mark

Thanks for asking Mark....

Ithaca guns occupy the same price point today used as they did when new compared to the Parker, Fox and Smith guns, nothing has changed in the last one hundred plus years.......there is a reason for this.......I agree with Jack O'Conner, and others, observations made some sixty odd years ago......I'm afraid any other intelligent discussion would fall on bias deaf ears.........

Guns are like women, everybody likes something different.......

Best,

Doug

Drew, thanks for not repeating my spelling error when quoting my statement about skeleton buttplates. Your picture of the wonderful Monogram Smith with skeleton buttplate reminds me of Parker Brothers orders in my collection for skeleton buttplates sold to Hunter Arms Company, Fulton, New York. One order is for only one buttplate, indicating the Hunter Arms did not stockpile them, but only ordered one when needed. A single skeleton buttplate was charged at $.75 minus a 15% discount for a net charge of $.64. I would assume that Ithaca also knew where to get a skeleton buttplate for sixty four cents rather than going to the trouble and expense of making them.

I have two 16 gauge 37s. Is that a "double"? wink

I've got one 37R in 16. Shot one pheasant with it this year. Just one, like I always do. The rest of the pheasants are taken with one of my double barrels. Pheasants taken with a double seem to taste better. grin

Walt, that is some of the finest engraving I have seen. The stippling behind the dogs and shading on the scroll is amazing. The model 37 is equally impressive.

I know this dealer. I have done some work for him in the past. Mostly just cleaning and minor touch ups. Pretty straight up guy that always has great high grade items. He had a 28 ga. Bonehill I was lusting for a while back.
