A 3-inch 20 allows me to shoot an ounce of steel at decoying ducks and woodies buzzing at first light. I can live with that.

I agree with Chops. But steel is so lousy that they had to do something in order to make it work.

A suggestion: instead of regurgitating canards, consider developing a firearms knowledge base by way of experience.

Um, say what you want about his opinions, Chops has plenty of experience.

Well, then, maybe you'd better look some more. If you thought I was talking about a 3" 20 ga. you need to re-read the part about 1/2 oz. shot, in reference to a 2 1/2" .410 load. The original poster led off with belittling the 3" .410.

I shoot whatever shells I want .Sometimes I shoot 2 1/2, 2 3/4,and 3" all in the same day. I like them all for their intended uses. I Dont ask for anyones approval.Maybe we should all do that.

I shoot .410, 20, 16, 12, and 10 guages. The only thing I don't have in those guages is 3" 20 bore is 3 1/2" 12 bore and 3 1/2" 10 bore. I'm perfectly satisfied with what I have. Each one of my guns has a specific purpose. With all the different loadings for each there is sufficient overlap in the guages for me. I'm not going to buy some new whiz bang howitzer just because some guru in a gun magazine touts the thing to kill anything from ants to a T-Rex. Just my humble opinion. smile

Regurgitating canards- ain;t that Sylvester the Cat's gig- I thought I thaw a tweety-bird- Buurrrp- I prefer what the late Charels Askins and Nash Buckingham once said re: the dinky .410 bore. And I'll gladly wager a flat of RST 8 gauge turkey loads that more youngster who were first started into shotgunnery- and bird hunting by a parent who gave them a .410 single shot either (1) swapped it for a 20 gauge or (2) gave um shotgunnery and took up ping-pong instead!! A crippler and a real high $ item to shoot, and very little "bang for da buck"-- The 28 gauge has won a place in the hearts and minds of the skeet lads- anyone got a good receipe for cooking skeets??

Fair enough; his experience is not in evidence here. You would have to have been living under a rock since 1963 to not have noticed the dwindling significance of shot column height.

No, we still don't see serious trapshooters using 1 oz 20s. And a 2.5" 12 still (usually) throws more uniform patterns than the 1 oz 28.

Neither of these things invalidates 1 oz 20s (or 1 oz 28s.....or 3" .410s) b/c they offer demonstrable performance increases over the standard hull length/payloads for those who use those bore diameters. Why must I regard "efficiency" as sacred?

We don't even need to introduce non-tox into the discussion.
