I think the the magnum stuff is part of the attitude that higher/faster/farther/bigger has to be better.  Not sure if that's an inherently American attitude, but it seems to be prevalent here.  Golf club and ball advertising is all about it; not much is said about the fact that a  10' putt or a well-placed pitch shot counts one stroke just as does a 300 yard drive.  Same with fishing; the new rod and line manufacturers seem to be all about casting distance; feel and delicacy are secondary mentions, if at all.  But then, I never wanted a muscle car either, so what do I know?
