Kansas, at least SW Kansas down by OK is VERY open: you gotta be able to "reach out and touch someone" at longer ranges than I was prepared for when I hunted there in '07.
I've heard stories of folks taking their pointers to SW Kansas and have their hearts hit their throats when their big runners not used to a treeless horizon took off for the earth's end. The dogs weren't wearing "hearing aids". They did come back with their dogs.
I second that about Steve Snell. You can scratch around and save a few bucks, but you can't get the same service that he offers.
