At the party were: SDH in front pouring Black Dog Ale, Gunmaker Peter Noreen (White shirt, former Mauser action now .50 cal maker), the late James C. Flack (Brown shirt, client & hunting buddy from Atlanta), Jerry Fisher (maroon sweater), John Barsness (balding head under the peak of my neighbor's roof) Tim Crawford, raconteur (green hat) Kathy Hanson (pink skirt). Other notables in attendance were writer Steve Bodio and Melvin Forbes of Ultra Light Arms.

The tang looks to me like a transition between the first series "clover-leaf" and the second series, as per Rule's book on the M70-beautiful metal and stock work. And you are right as the mail about the "in general" basic utilitarian look of most match target rifles. not familiar with Warner aps-- but may have both the front and the rear Parker-Hales from a BSA 12/15 in .22L- and the extra discs as found in the brass round drum mounted on the forestock, ahead of the receiver- Nice gun, sweet trigger, 29" barrel heavy walled, wood looks like a high grade orange crate- will refinish that and re-set BP, cut barrel back to 26" and re-crown, and I have a 1" dia. 10X Lyman scope I'll mount on it- I'd prefer an 6X or 8X for sniping squirrels, but us farm boys have to use what we have on hand--I'd love to head shoot some "tree rats" with that sweet M37 Remmie, and that's a fact!!!

That really makes my 37 look "ugly", it does shoot like that!

37's may not be the most attractive rifle but they sure do shoot well. I sold mine to a friend here in Anchorage last year, a nice rifle with a Arthur Hubalek, barrel.

looks like a Kennedy to me. Two Kennedy HiWalls that have passed through my hands were stamped MK in the barrel channel. A Steyr 95 .243 (yes!!) with Apex marked barrel did not have MK stamp but was definitely Kennedy stock with chekering ;pattern from the book. Kennedy worked for Apex. Maybe he did not use stampe all the time.

Michael, was the Hubalek barreled 37 in the original stock?

Mark, there are two hi-wall varmint rifles stocked by Kennedy in the checkering book, were yours either of them?

No markings of any kind in the barrel channel of the 37.

I was digging through some old posts looking for something else and came across this post from 2011. I had totally forgot about posting this, but I do have an update on the stockmaker. It was not Monty Kennedy as the cheekpiece had led me to believe, but rather it was stocked just a bit south and east of him in Sheridan Wyoming by Lenard Brownell. This was discovered quite by accident as I was thumbing through the NRA gunsmithing guide, which is a collection of articles from the American Rifleman, and wouldn't you know it, here is this exact rifle, in am article on stocking a rifle written by Lenard Brownell. Brownell was one of the greats and I am happy to have this example of his work.
