This technology is employed to recover contact surfaces in aviation turbines, printing machines and other similar industries. The electroplating process is applied selectively with a pen on eroded surfases, leaving aside the not affected ones. Most common metals employed are Nickel,Chrome, Zinc, Copper, etc. There is anybody that knows of or employs this technique on shotguns?

I was thinking on exposed or easely accesible surfaces. Maybe getting inside a tube is the next step, it would have many uses in industry.

Have seen it used (and advertised) to build up a worn hook on a sxs rather than shimming. Works fine, use a flash of copper on the steel, then nickel. Takes time to get a buildup.
Used for years to salvage railway axles (tolerance was +/- .0005)
Buildup could be as much as .006 - takes quite a while.

Oldstarfire,

sorry for my delay in responding, away from my PC, thanks very much, I guess it takes time to buildup. Tomorrow I will go for the first sesion with my Fox AE. The hook is my main concern.

Plasma spray arc is the best way to go for hook build-up work--make sure you get the radius of the hook dimensioned first, as maintaining that is critical for proper fit and on face lockup of the gun. I caution against TIG, as too much heat input into the lug- heat travels in metal- and can destroy the braze joint's integrity- and a loose barrel lug is expensive to repair--

Don't think I would want nickel wearing against the hinge pin.

Fox, How hot do you have to get the hook for the metal to bond?

Done yesterday, one hour work including disassembly and cleaning. Deposition made on the hook face and on both hook´s sides. Gun is tight now, no lateral or forward movement. Special concern are the angular surfaces, they have to be rounded with fine sandpaper, outherwise they may splinter in corners. All treated surfaces were polished. Cobalt was employed as bonding element.

Mark, yes nickel against hinge pin is a concern, decision to go was taken considering that Fox Chromox frames and barrels are made of chrome-nickel steel. If hinge pin wears in the future it will receive same treatment.

Gun fires OK.

I've never used it on shotguns, but have on other engineering and "cosmetic" applications. It's big advantage is the ability to take the metal deposition process to the job, rather than t'other way about, so big heavy things like generator / armature bearings can be repaired without transporting them to a plating shop.

The process has been developed over the years by the DALIC company.

I can't really see it as being worthwhile for obliterating pitting; you'd have to deposit / hone / deposit / hone several times to get a decent result. When I've filled corrosion pits on hydraulic shaftwork the objective was to obtain a smooth surface rather than make a metallurgical match with the substrate; just a matter of stopping the seals wearing and hence oil piddling out.

Nothing much above room temperature.
