I have a 1899 savage chambered in 300 Savage, serial number is 152861 which I believe is pre-300 savage cartridge introduction. The barrel is I think a 1903 Springfield barrel due to a groove near the chamber I've seen on other 03 barrels, this one is nicely finished but has no markings other than "SHIVELL 300 sav" stamped near the chamber. The forearm is of the takedown type but the barrel won't come off although I haven't really reefed on it. Does anyone have any info as to who Shivell is? Any other guns modified by Shivell? It looks to be a very professional job so I'm thinking there must have been more, the barrel markings look very straight and factory applied. I'd sure like to get an idea as to what the story is on this. Thank you.
Brad

There was an Arthur Shivell who was a gunsmith from Saugus, California.

Thanks Michael, I heard from someone else one time they thought he wrote a article or two in Outdoor life or something like that back in the 20's but that was all I ever heard about him. Are you familar with any of his work?

Brad, The action needs to be open to remove a take down barrel.

Michael, Thank you for the info, That helps me understand a bit more about who did this. I do know about the takedown (action open) but thought maybe since it was a modification it wouldn't take down anymore, I'll carefully apply more pressure and see, It could be old oil and a tight fit just makes it seem stuck. I wish I could see more of his work.

Brad
