The name is not Santchni...it is LA BANTCHNI as in JULES outstanding riflemaker at Pachmayr's from the late 1930's until the late 60's...early 70's (and was on his own,I've been told to the early 80's) Google his name and you'll have the pleasure of seeing quite a few examples of his Classic style work. I met him while in CA.in the 60's on my way to Vietnam and spent quite a few hours at their shop recuperating, after a 2nd combat tour and a run in with a 60mm mortar round. They were kind, putting up with me on crutches and made me feel welcome. Jules and I spoke Italian in the shop (my mother was born in Palermo) and Frank said "Only German spoken Here". NIce Rifle. HTH. Jerry

He did wood and metal - one rifle of his I've seen was stamped with his name on the barrel. The metal work was somewhat...prosaic...not the equal of his stockmaking, which was top shelf.

Jerry,
You say that La Bantchni worked at Pachmayrs from late 1930's on. Do you have any reference that I might check for this? I do have the Pachmayr book and will reread it but don't remember him as part of the early years.
Anything you might have to offer would be a help and save me having to reread the book.
Thanks,
I've been thinking about what you said about speaking Italian and Frank saying only German spoken here. Do I understand that Frank Pachmayr said that?
Do I understand that Jules spoke Italian? Help me out here I'm confused (happens all the time).

There is a thread above which includes a post by his stepson who offered to be a source of information...I wonder if he's still monitoring this board?

Michael: Jules worked part-time for Pachmayr while he was still a machinist at Boeing Aircraft in Pasadena. I believe he went to work full time gunmaking with Frank, after he retired from Boeing in the early 50's. As to the German speaking...Yes but it was said in jest, due to his father's German Heritage. Jules spoke good Italian. On the other hand... Mi scusi mi Italiano e' molto bruto. Ciao Jerry

I really like the pictures of the rifles that you've posted,if you have pictures of the other sides of these rifles, I would love to see them. I am curious as to how the cheekpieces were done. Sorry for the delay I had to look for them. Seems I don't have one of the .30-06.

[quote=Ryan McNabb]Wow...Jules La Bantchni is what that means. Superb stockmaker from the 60's and 70's. Not sure when he stopped. Gun Digests of the 70's often featured his work. When I was a kid, his rifles were the ones that caught my eyes.
That's really nice.
Ryan, I only have the 1965 and 1975 editions of Gun Digest but I couldn't find La Bantchni in either? Nor could I find him in the Custom Gunsmith section of the Directory in the back of the book? (also checked 1955 and 1985) Any clues?
