Say, Wonko, why don't you tell us just what does have meaning?

Full choke, 1 1/2oz nickel plated #5 shot. Whether that was 0.030 full or 0.040 full and #5 American or #5 English we just don't know... someone get the 60 Minutes team on this!

Say, Wonko, why don't you tell us just what does have meaning? OK - after you have waded thru that morass of pseudo-scientific claptrap, just what revelatory information jumped on you that was heretofore a mystery? Meaning is in putting your fave load thru your fave gun at your fave pattern board and deciding if you like that. Or if extrapolating random events is not your thing, maybe not bothering with the mysteries of Gaussian (maybe) distributions and just shooting the gun if you like that. I mean, it's a shotgun. Get over it. have a day Dr.WtS

Come on Charles! We have a broad spectrum of humans on this board. Some are artistically inclined more than others and the same with those who are technically talented. What difference does it make if Rocketman finds his enjoyment investigating the technical versus the musical. His contributions fulfill needs for others too.

WtS, thanks, very interesting discussion. There is a chance that the researchers involved may just be able to write an actual choke spec that will allow a measurable extension in distance of bloom of the Gausian pattern. Now that would be remarkable. Dr. Jones uses 10-shot averages, so he is not dealing with random events. Based on your recommendations, we should all be still shooting cyl guns and the group of inventive gunmakers who got us into choke needed to be ______ (fill in the blank). Not everyone needs to understand or contribute or support this research. Everyone will benefit if it produces some result.
WtS, I'm bringing my MOI machine to the LV gunshow. Beware!!!;-)

Mr. Amos I suspect your MOI gear will be more popular than Wonkys Obama 2012 bumperstickers, as well as more useful.

I'm amazed that some presumed political viewpoint has become a component of this discussion. Well, actually not considering...
So: "There is a chance that the researchers involved may just be able to write an actual choke spec that will allow a measurable extension in distance of bloom of the Gausian pattern. Now that would be remarkable."
Dang, Rocketman! The remarkable part is that we can pretty much do that now about as well as it will ever be done. Remember those stampings on the bbls or those markings on screw-ins??? That's them!

I wonder if those nickle 5's were buffered? Sometimes it's possible to see a nice "Gaussian bloom" with buffered loads. But then, Digby is at a "we don't need no stinkin' buffer" level anyway.

You gents are causing some serious grins this cold & rainy morning. One almost has to ask about a 'turkey' designation connoting more, but I shall refrain;-) Hahaha
Little doubt there is something quite positive to be said for 'late bloomers', but I would think it more a function of the ammunition itself than any specific 'magic' choke configuration/designation; e.g., 3.5" 12ga. 1.5oz. BBB 'Black Cloud' ammo. Wads look like miniature rocket ships w/no petals and small cuts that become 'air brakes' after firing in the bottom portion of the shotcup. I've not used it personally nor patterned it in anything either, but have seen some large waterfowl taken w/it to good effect [DRT] at what I would judge to have been 45yards or perhaps a bit farther. The spent wads I picked up did not show signs of any plastic scoring, they did not appear to have scruffed at all on their outer periphery. I was impressed.
This is of course both empirical and anecdotal. One would have to do some tests at progressively greater distances to show there was, in fact, a 'later bloom' taking place when compared with more conventional ammunition.
I always thot the little webbed bags of shot loaded back before the turn of the previous century showed a clear understanding of the benefits of the concept, even if thay didn't have the correct material(s) at hand to achieve it.
