I'm amazed that some presumed political viewpoint has become a component of this discussion. Well, actually not considering...
So: "There is a chance that the researchers involved may just be able to write an actual choke spec that will allow a measurable extension in distance of bloom of the Gausian pattern. Now that would be remarkable."
Dang, Rocketman! The remarkable part is that we can pretty much do that now about as well as it will ever be done. Prithee, how do you know, "as well as it will ever be done?" The point is that Dr. Jones has recorded a statistically valid improvement over Full choke; "statistically valid" being the key concept. Remember those stampings on the bbls or those markings on screw-ins??? That's them! Nawww, the stampings are usually directionally pretty correct until you reach "turkey." At that point, Turkey has not usually been found to better Full. Full meant as much choke effect as was available. Jones now has something more than Full. We know that because of that "statistically valid" bit. The question is how to replicate it reliably. When he can write a spec that reliably beats Full, Turkey will be meaningful.HTH

I wonder if those nickle 5's were buffered? Sometimes it's possible to see a nice "Gaussian bloom" with buffered loads. But then, Digby is at a "we don't need no stinkin' buffer" level anyway. WtS, shotgun patterning has moved to a new level. Get over it.

You gents are causing some serious grins this cold & rainy morning. One almost has to ask about a 'turkey' designation connoting more, but I shall refrain;-) Hahaha
Little doubt there is something quite positive to be said for 'late bloomers' (yes, indeed, as bloom distance determines max effective range), but I would think it more a function of the ammunition itself than any specific 'magic' choke configuration/designation; e.g., 3.5" 12ga. 1.5oz. BBB 'Black Cloud' ammo (To date, choke constrictiion has been the determinate of pattern bloom vs time/distance at statisticallly valid levels. Pellet retained energy and target must be matched for maximum range for a given combination of MV, pellet size, and target. Pellet count determines how large a diameter can remain effective. Ammo has not been found to influence pattern ploom rate.) Wads look like miniature rocket ships w/no petals and small cuts that become 'air brakes' after firing in the bottom portion of the shotcup. I've not used it personally nor patterned it in anything either, but have seen some large waterfowl taken w/it to good effect [DRT] at what I would judge to have been 45yards or perhaps a bit farther. The spent wads I picked up did not show signs of any plastic scoring, they did not appear to have scruffed at all on their outer periphery. I was impressed. Has anyone patterened this ammo per Dr. Jones's method? This is of course both empirical and anecdotal. One would have to do some tests at progressively greater distances to show there was, in fact, a 'later bloom' taking place when compared with more conventional ammunition. Yes, solid thinking!!
I always thot the little webbed bags of shot loaded back before the turn of the previous century showed a clear understanding of the benefits of the concept, even if thay didn't have the correct material(s) at hand to achieve it. I don't think so. To my knowledge, nobody has ever proven this concept. Good points to discuss. Keep thinking!!DDA

The part of this that I object to is assigning some "scientific" tag to what is not. Averaging random events produces only a range of response that any one event may fall into. So he used ten as an average? How did he arrive at that # as a significant point of finality?
Einstein commented that the only wrong w/ chemistry was that it was too difficult for chemists. I'm thinking that the same situation applies to shotgun ballistics and shotgun ballistic researchers. Some meaningful and interesting data could be maybe derived from thoughtful and diligent experimentation within rigidly defined parameters. I've not seen that. I haven't even seen a reasonably well designed experiment.
Make believe science is just that - make believe. You can extrapolate random data in any way you like and you still get nothing more than that is known already - if you want to know how a specific gun is going to pattern w/ a specific load at a specific distance (after you've made the standard guess from the bbl stamp) you take it out and shoot it.

It's really not that difficult, it just can't be done quick and easy on a pennies budget. Of course that would mean someone really GAF about it instead of just gasing on about junk data.

I'm guessing you, Charles, have never taken a course in statistics - or else you weren't paying attention. A shotgun pattern, like a rifle shot/artillery shot/bomb drop is not a totally random event - each has a bunch of constraints. However, no two events will ever be exactly the same, provided you have the means to measure accurately enough. If you had enough pellets in a pattern, fired enough rifle bullets/artillery shells/dropped enough bombs, you would have exactly a Rayleigh (family Gausian, but more precisely descriptive for the subject at hand) distribution of impacts. Statistics has means for calculation the size of population needed for any given required precision. Dr. Jones has stated his required level of precision and has experimentally determined the level of repeatability of patterns. Since he has a high requirement for precision, he needs ten repetitions of a pattern for a given gun and load. This is much like rifle sight-in where you decide to use groups of three, five, or ten shots, depending on how precise the zero point is required to be and how variable the rifle and load turns out to be. Were I to shoot a pattern that was basically enclosed in a 30" circle and to fire a 500 shot group with a 2 MOA rifle at 1000 yards, the resulting pattern and group would be quite similar in terms of statistics.

I'm thinking that the same situation applies to shotgun ballistics and shotgun ballistic researchers. Nope, the statistics needed are well known. Some meaningful and interesting data could be maybe derived from thoughtful and diligent experimentation within rigidly defined parameters. It has been done and now exists in print. I've not seen that. I haven't even seen a reasonably well designed experiment. So, you haven't seen Dr. Jones's book, "Sporting Shotgun Perdormance - Measurement, Analysis, Optimisation."
Make believe science is just that - make believe. Except, in this case, this is the real deal; a major, well designed and executed scientific experiment with a published result for all to see. You can extrapolate random data in any way you like and you still get nothing more than that is known already - if you want to know how a specific gun is going to pattern w/ a specific load at a specific distance (after you've made the standard guess from the bbl stamp) you take it out and shoot it. Yes, you shoot ten patterns, digitally photo each, subject each to analysis and then combine all ten for an average result. Dr. Jones has done 250 gun - load combinations (2,500 patterns) and is able to draw limited statistically valid conclusions. Read the book - - - slowly and enough times to really understand what is presented for your learning. have a day

Wonko is definitely in my court, although he hasn't said it in so many words in this thread. Go out and learn to shoot. Everything else will fall into place. Shotgun ballistics hobbyists are notoriously poor shots. By the way, give up the "quoting". It is a pain in the ass and no one wants to reread all that stuff. The "quote" function is only used by idiots. Maybe Dave will disable the function to allow these threads to make some sense.

If use of "quote" is the definition of idiot, then I guess I'm a major memeber of the Idiot tribe. I was under the impression that use of direct responses inserted into a quote was a very efficient way to avoid people having to scroll back to see what was being discussed.
What has the shooting skill level of a shotgun researcher to do with research projects?
So, am I correct in understanding that you are satisfied with current state of development of the shotgun and object to further research that might lead to a higher state of development?

Don, in reply to your last question: I was shooting 90% patterns with soft shot, fiber wads, and roll crimps in 1961. I have shot 60 yard patterns with 1 1/4 ounces of soft fours that would kill a mallard dead in any part of the 30" pattern. I have killed geese at 70 yards with 1 3/4 ounce ten gauge loads of steel BBs. What kind of "new technology" do I need to have a good hunt? Learning to shoot a shotgun is much more important than busy ballistics. Wonko taught me that.
