What would be the proper barrel color for late 1860s Boss barrels? Anyone have any examples? Thanks!

It is extremely difficult if not impossible to say exactly what colour any barrels should be as tastes and perceived 'correctness' have undoubtedly changed over the last 150 years. However it is reasonable to assume that it wasn't 'black and white', it wasn't called 'browning' by accident.
My preference is for a brown the colour of slightly grey milk chocolate. I use traditional solutions of my own construction and, as far as I am aware, traditional methods of (very) slow rust browning and this is the colour I land up with.
I don't use logwood as my experiments haven't shown any justification for its use but maybe I just don't have the knack.
I do clean up with dilute sulphuric acid to enhance the contrast but leave it that.
I seal with good old gun oil after a long soak in warm, dilute sodium hydroxide solution to neutralise all the acids.

I sometimes flood the ribs with WD40 after the caustic soda sink. Then Eezox once completely dry. I've tried various Angers mixtures and Peter Dysons brown and all are pretty good. Don't use logwood in the final step either.

Thanks guys! I figured it was a brown, but have not seen any before in good shape. This one is buffed out already. I am just putting some info together for when I start working on it. I have some issues like you did Tony with some pitting on the locks and trigger guard. I am going to try doing like you did and have it welded up.

Is Eezox the best finish at the end of browning? Does it enhance the look?

I've heard of Beeswax being rubbed in at the last stages but I'm not sure what that does.

All I know is that I had a pair of best barrels with finish I liked and another I don't. I feel like the issue has something to do with final steps as opposed to something intra-process.

Suggestions?

I've done both. Bees wax is an old fashioned way of preserving the barrels. It takes a heap of work and time but can look stunning if it is done right.

Several coats of very light Eezox looks amazing too. One is easier to do than the other. smile
