Jimmy, the picture of the gun, not the serial number, shows that the gun in question does not have a "canoe paddle" stock. In fact, it could have been made any time after the frame was made, 1942 or 1957 or even later. As you say, it couldn't have been made in 1933, but it could have been made in a great number of other years. The letter is the way to go.

I understand what you are saying, eightbore. JB showed a picture of the half pistol grip in the second post. Some call it the canoe paddle stock. But, I was merely trying to point out that Winchester stopped putting the half pistol grip on their 21s in 1933 on frames UNDER the serial number 8674. (Give or take) Since his frame (not the gun but only the frame)was not made until 1940, which would be seven years AFTER they stopped putting that type of stock on the gun, I doubt very seriously if his gun came with the half pistol grip or canoe paddle type stock. And since there were only a little over 600 guns sold the first year, there were probably only a few thousand 21s with the half pistol grip stock on them. I have a 20 gauge with the serial number 5318 which has the half pistol grip and that is about as high as I have ever seen one. You might find one with that stock in the sevens or eight thousands, but once you go higher than that especially up to 16 thousand, chances are pretty nil that one came originally with that stock. We'll have to see if he gets a Cody letter but I'd bet I'm right. I've looked at too many Model 21s over the years. So, what is the serial number of your gun, JB? If it's a 12 gauge I'd bet the serial number is pretty low. If it's a twenty it might be in the 4-5 thousands. That's the way they usually run, anyway. Good luck.
