Flat base bullets typically have a lot WORSE BC than boattails of the same weight, but tests have shown that the angled base does, at least in some cases, cause increased gas erosion of the throat.

At shorter ranges of less than 500 yds I've gotten noticably better accuracy from flat-base bullets, especially in benchrest-type rifles. I've found this to be true over the last 30 years with probably 6-7 of my personal rifles, all in calibers less than 7mm. FWIW, YMMV.
