I love the diamond grip. However, when I visited my stockmaker recently, the shape he provided on the grip of my project Parker was so comfy that I did not dare have him change anything. I would still like a diamond grip.

Gnomon - any chance you could take a shot at describing the cross section of the H&H wrist?

eightbore - I'd appreciate if you could describe the cross section of your project Parker?

TIA

My gun is being made as a heavy pigeon gun, so I don't think the grip is especially thin. The gun us under construction, so I can't measure it right now. The model stock was the original Parker straight grip, so nothing unusual. However, even without checkering, it feels very secure in the hand, a feeling that does not exist in all straight grip guns. The diamond grip provides that secure feeling in almost all cases where that design is used. When I went in for the final fitting when the stock was a good part body putty, it felt so good that we sent it to the duplicator as is. Now the final stock is headed up and ready to be checkered and it feels just as good. It weighed almost nine pounds originally, so I think it will weigh at least eight and a half when finished.

This is a very interesting thread. I have read with interest in the past, and on this thread, about the "diamond" grip, and find it fascinating.
Also, the thread has had me measuring the size of grips on my guns, almost like a Pavlov's dog.

I love most of the threads on here, and after blocking out a couple of jerks, find this site just a wonderful place for information.

Best way I can describe it is as an eccentric oval - not very pronounced at all and I never really noticed the configuration until I mentioned it to someone in the NYC H&H gunroom and he explained it to me. Once it was pointed out it was noticeable and I think it explains a lot of handling. If you're ever in London or NYC look at a bunch of H&Hs - a very unremarkable gun in so many ways but when together it's amazing.

I too really like the diamond grips.

A friend just had his Francotte restocked and requested this grip style and man if feels nice!

Also, I've owned some older Grullas in the past that had diamond shapes..... even though these guns didn't have straight grips... but they weren't full pistil grips either. More like POW.

You can clearly see the ridge (the "corner of the diamond") running down the side of grips.

Shinbone, I remembered that I have the bondo model for my Parker pigeon gun here, and measured the grip circumference. It is right on 4 1/2", is a straight grip roundish configuration.

Bill,

Are you actually going to use the Parker pigeon gun for serious pigeon shooting, or just wanted one built in that configuration?

Reason I ask is, I'm surprised at wanting a gun built for shooting heavy loads (3 3/4 - 1 1/4) with a straight grip. My experience has been that I get much better recoil control, and a quicker recovery for the second shot, with some sort of pistol grip. I like straight grips, but not for heavy loads, Mr. Buckingham notwithstanding. Maybe just me, tho'.

Franc, here you go, to back up your description, ;-)

If you close your hand joining the tip of your index finger with the tip of your thumb, you'll see the logic behind the diamond shape.

Again, great info everyone! Especially the photos and the diagrams. It sounds like the diamond grip works well and is relatively easy to implement. I'll be sure to examine the grip of an H&H the next time I handle one, too.
