Here are some more views of my Schlegelmilch Mauser, the shop your G&H barreled rifle came out of was likely identified on the barrel as this one was. It also may have had an octagon brl maybe accounting for what looks like gaps in the inletting from here(?) You might see traces of that in the brl channel?
(BTW, this is the styling I will be following for the custom Krag I'll be working on next year.)

OK, update on the G&H Sauer Mauser. I passed on it. With the time of the year and a trip to Texas and then one to SHOT Show in Vegas next month, I just didnt feel comfortable (might miss another toy LOL). I truly appreciate everyones input and if it is still available when I am back in the springtime, it will probably go home with me. If any of you that offered information are interested in it, please email me at thaine@yucca.net and I will let you know where it is. However, all is not bad. I just got back from the Denver show and am the new owner of a Mauser sporter in 8x57 J ? (318 diameter). It is styled much like the one SDH posted, minus side panels. I will get pictures up as soon as I can get home and take it apart. Details are octagon to round barrel with full matted rib. Marked O.G. Scherell on RH side, Berlin Suhl on the LH side and KRUPPSTAHL (Krupp steel) on the top rear of the rib. Standing leaf sight with one folding leaf marked 88 on the bottom. #19 on top of the bolt root and #2 on the follower along with the 2.75g G.B.P. on LH side of the receiver. No other visible marks. Light engraving and claw mount bases on rear receiver ring and barrel/rib. Fitting claw rings will be fun (I have a G&H top for the other). Bright sharp bore, horn grip cap and butt plate and DST. Couple of screws look non original and minor repair at the rear of tang. Nice part is it was a third of the asking price of the G&H and while it doesnt have quite the same character, I can live more comfortably with it right now. I had looked at it last Sunday at a show in Colorado Springs and it was still available at this one.
edited to add what I found on the maker
" SCHAFTOL originates from the house of "Jagd- und Sportwaffenfabrik Scherell & Co" - founded in 1834 - and was developed in the twenties of the last century by Oswald Scherell, Berlin, the leading Prussian gunsmith of that time, on the basis of his daily practical experience." Guess I will need to buy some for the stock LOL!

Nero, it is the Shooting Hunting Outdoor Trade (SHOT) show. It is the industry show where eveyone displays their wares and new products. I am a member of the National Shooting Sports Foundation as a range owner. They are the ones who put it on. You are there the week it is on, 16-19 Jan. Google NSSF and their web site has all the information.
