I think with that post we have reached some common ground, Larry. Differing hunting styles and quarry changes needs a lot.
I respect everyone's opinions that have posted, even though I don't agree with everything. As I said earlier, "Different chokes for different folks".
All my best, Stan

This has been an interesting thread. I have a gun with zero choke, and one with f/f, and can't hit very well with either one. Somehow, I don't think the choke is to blame.

Can someone explain to me why I can shoot my SBE at sporting clays with a XXX Full (Comp n Choke) turkey choke better than I can with any of the more open factory chokes ? Joe, given the designation of that particular choke, it obviously fits the user. The development of choke did not really render cylinder obsolete. What it did was make a short range weapon into a slightly longer range weapon. But for most people, shooting flying remains a short range game regardless of choke, based more on the inherent difficulty of hitting a flying target rather than on the potential provided by the choke/load combination to deliver an effective pattern at greater range.

Can someone explain to me why I can shoot my SBE at sporting clays with a XXX Full (Comp n Choke) turkey choke better than I can with any of the more open factory chokes ? jOe, Charlie Boswell (Comp-N-Choke designer and owner) and I are leaving for Arkansas, to duck hunt, early Monday morning. I'll be sure and tell him you said that. He will get a kick out of that, and I'll tell you why. Years ago he and I were going to shoot a round of sporting clays, and Charlie, being the innovative guy that he is, decided to shoot a Mossberg jammamatic with a XXXFull CnC in it, a gun he had never shot before. He shot the highest score he had ever shot on a round of sporting, at that time, a 97! And it really wasn't a soft course either, not tournament targets, but not soft. Anecdotes aside, over the years I have found that many times a strange gun (if it fits you reasonably well) will shoot you an above average score on the first round. It is a strange phenomenon, and is exactly opposite from what common sense would tell you would happen, but I have seen it, and done it, many times. Man, I DO love to see what a tight choked 1 1/8 oz. load of 8s does to a well centered clay. Poof! SRH

It's not a strange gun....and not just a one time deal.

Excuse me. Then maybe you should be shooting pigeons with it, instead of shooting the breeze about it.

Stan, I think part of it is that you tend to bear down and try a bit harder with a new gun. I think most of us have had what I'd call honeymoon periods with new guns . . . and then performance settles back to normal.

Well, I've now been happily married for better than twice that . . . but it took me a couple false starts before I found the right one. Kinda like guns.
