Why would one "Want" #5s in a .410??
Miller, Dedicated Maine wingshooters believe grouse (shot on the wing) and partridge (ground or tree-swatted) are two completely different birds. I am certain more partridge are taken each year here. A single shot .410 is one of the most popular partridge guns up here. Methods include road walking/riding and sitting in trees around apple piles. From time to time we run into partridge hunters afield. Several are good friends. I've asked about preferred guns and loads and univerally they prefer the larger shot sizes and full chokes. The 3" .410 in #4 (no, that's not a typo) or #6 seems to be preferred. I have never encountered a partridge hunter using the #7.5s or #8s I stuff into my M-42s. And, if anything, I get the impression #4s are preferred to #6s by these guys.
