TW, thanks for your thoughts. I had my best dog shot and killed along a fence line by a long time friend, but for a moment a careless hunter. It changed everything in both of our hunting lives. I know Joe Wood was trying to say something in jest with his statement above, but these things affect not only ourselves, but our extended families and friends, as well as all of us who enjoy the outdoors.

Not that many years ago I smoked, did not wear any seat belt and wore orange only under protest. Now that I am older, more mature to some, I no longer smoke, always wear a seat belt and wear orange when hunting. If I get any more safety concerned I will start putting training wheels back on all my bikes.

To give you an idea of how effective I think blaze orange is, I make my wife wear a big floppy blaze hat and vest when she takes the rare occasion to come out and walk with us and take pictures hunting. When I made her wear it, I had no excuse to her when she asked where mine was.

The current issue of Field & Stream (Dec. 2011) has a long article about a deer hunting accidental death that occured 37 years ago in Pennsylvania; and how it impacted the family members. Page 98, "Following Our Father"

I don't recall when blaze orange became mandatory in Minnesota. I don't mind wearing it. I have a nice vest with convenient pockets and a game pouch in the back. The game pouch is fine for 1 or 2 ruffed grouse. As far as being told that I have to wear it, that does not bother me. After 20+ years in the Navy and being told what to do, or not to do, I don't sweat it.

I wear a Blaze orange Columbia ball cap when I am with others. when I am by myself, i wear whatever I grab. That means I am on my 500 acre parcel I have exclusive use of and its too far off the beaten path for anyone to get to . to far off the road and there are so few bird and small game hunters around here i dont worry about it. When I hunt with a friend, I wear the Blaze orange ball cap and sometimes a Columbia shirt with a little orange on it bceause it wards off the briars, not because it has orange. A hat is the best thing to protect you. I figure that if i am 50 -60 yards away form another hunter and he shoots me accidentaly, the 7.5 or 8 shot wont kill me but it would damn well blind me if I got hit in the face. the balze hat shows off the most vital part of my body that might get hit. maybe it will make someone stop when they see that blaze on top of their bead and they dont pull the trigger. How many of you have lost track of a partner in thick cover? maybe faulty logic but I go with it!!!

anyway, how many of you wear shooting or ballistic glasses when hunting?? now thats what you should be doing. they keep those branches and thorns and crap out of your eyes and will stop a pellet form blinding you.

I got shot once. After that you think less of what you look like and a little more about making sure it does not happen again. I try and always wear some orange.

A hunting friend told me of a local shooter are our range that got shot by his buddy while quail hunting in AZ, It was pretty close and the shell was a 1 1/4 oz #6 (I dunno why he was using such a heavy load) as I recall. It knocked the guy down injuring one side of his body seriously. The shooter got really shaken up, but the victim told him to go to the truck and drive to him. The shooter ran to the truck and on the way to or likely back from the truck, had a heart attack and died. The victim had to crawl to the truck and he pushed the Onstar emergency button. He survived and looked like he was permanently impaired with restricted arm movement when I saw him.

I think you out-did me. That whole story of the daughter and all is just a huge downer.

There was a little more I recall about the event above: The shooter collapsed from the heart attack on top of the victim and died. What a crummy hunt that was.
