Peabodys were also made in sporting and target configurations, too. Monty Whitley's web site has one still viewable
-> here <- and I've seen a few others advertised from time to time. Peabody even had his own line of target cartridges for long range competition of the times, typically fairly short, very fat rounds in order to feed down the ramp in the top of the block.
I've read somewhere that the Peabody was one of the strongest actions of the BP era but I can't remember the reference at the moment. Most of the ones I have seen have been military configuration as pictured in the previous post and primarily chambered in .43 Spanish. I have a .43 reputed to have been sold as a sporter by the factory made from leftover military parts when the company shut down. The lock and hammer are virtually identical to those found on Spencer rifles.
