No one can tell me how many angels can dance on pin, so let's try another question.
I see a number of sidelocks advertised with five, six or seven pins. What does the different number of pins tell me about the gun? And what are the merits or demerits of each? Thanks.

Generally, more pins indicate a higher quality lock.

Having observed the price on those advertizing many pins I think they charge by the pin, & certainly not what a worker gets paid for drilling & tapping a hole & buying another "screw". Never did understand why they call them "Pins" when they have wrinkles around their shanks, to me a pin is smooth & drives in.

My understanding is that the only difference between a 5 pin versus 7 pin (I am unaware of any 6 pin offering) is the manner in which the intercepting safety sears are driven. In a 7 pin gun a leaf spring is used, thus driving the requirement for 2 additional pins. In a 5 pin gun a coil spring powers the safety sears, negating the need for the two extra pins.
As noted, the general feeling is that a 5 pin gun is slightly cheaper to manufacture.
If I am incorrect in my understanding I welcome the feedback of those more knowledgeable!

Jack; That was sorta meant as humor. Now I think these pinless guns are sorta like womens dresses. Ordinary sizes are the least expensive, but get one of those old Southern Ladies dresses with yards & yards of mat'l & the price goes up, but on the other hand price a "Super Mini" with practically no mat'l at all & you get sticker shock.
Thus in the guns you pay more to see more pins, but most of all to see none at all.

This Beretta is pinless, but I can see 4 plugs on the left side or sort of. 4-plugs sidelock...
Thre are 9-pins sidelocks.
