I have information from his grandson that it was made for a customer in Machias, NY. He did not include the customers name.

This is a Ballard .22 rimfire prone target rifle with a C.C. Johnson barrel. The stock is unmarked, but could possibly be an early Hal Hartley.

This is another Ballard Schuetzen rifle, also in .22 lr, by another famous barrel maker named Johnson, Eric Johnson. Stock work by Argus Barker from a Shuttleworth blank. Fecker scope.

Do you have the information on Eric Johnson rifle as to who it was made for. If not I have a copy of his shop books.

No, Michael, I don't. Where should I look for a number on the barrel?

Some have barrel serial numbers and dates but many do not. Eric Johnson recorded the serial number of the rifle he put the barrel on. So if you're barrel was originally put on that rifle it might take some time but I should be able to find it.

That R-2 Hiwall setup is a neat snapshot into "the birth of varminting"! Wonder how many upstate New Yorkers still pursue the wily whistle pig. I used to be one of them, but not with a classic outfit like that.

Area where I hunted, Southern Vermont/NY border was a sort of seminal area for gunsmiths (and Mormons). People around there still remembered Parker Ackley very well, and some of his early efforts were still in use even in the 1990s.
