I would be looking for a Lefever with a bit less mileage and neglect than the three at Cabela's Hamburg. I didn't look at the price tags. They are not guns I would choose at any price. Keep looking and don't turn down a good Twist Steel H Grade.

I am open to any grade that is in decent shape. After seeing the asking prices at Cabelas, i am a little leery of guns advertised as being in good condition that are in the same approximate price range. That's why I asked for advice on sellers I could trust.

That gun is really rough Jim. What a shame to see it so badly corroded. I picked up a really nice G damascus with great barrels a couple years ago for 2/3 that price.

Buy condition first. The sad fact is that a gun like the one on Auctionarms is a real money pit. Before you spend money you need to find as nice a gun as you can and buy the best that you can afford, not the cheapest one you can find and hope to fix it up later. Set a spending limit and look for a gun in thar range. Looking is half the fun and you will see more than one good looking gun with issues. Choose which ones you want to take on and pass on the rest. Some of the best buys are not the ones that you should fall for. Fixer upers are a trap that can become a real money pit before you know what happens.

The evaluation order for me is barrels, metal condition, wood condition, fit and then finish. If any one of the top of the list is rough or bad the guns gets very little interest. I do not expect one of these guns to fit me as I like rather high stocks and most Lefevers are rather low. But metal problems or barrels issues are real deal killers as they cost major money to correct. Wood and finish of wood is easier for me to correct myself.

Has Fritz B. sold his H-grade twist-barreled 16? Might be worth looking into? Advertised here in past year.

Rabbit,
The H 16 just sold last week. I just relisted the GE 12 on the for sale list here today. I hope you are enjoying the FE, I sometimes reget selling it,especially if I never find the C grade I have been looking for.
RGS022,
Good luck in your search for a E or F grade. You'll usually run across several "dogged out" guns for every keeper you come across.

Hi Fritz:

As noted above, I shot it exactly twice at skeet sta. 2 singles. Centered both; put it away. So, I'd say again that the comb without "excessive" drop is nice. Well, Mike Orlen did clean it up a bit ahead of the chambers on the theory that pits as stress risers are worse than the loss of wall thickness. Didn't take much as I suspicioned it wouldn't after similar experience having a "cordurory road" honed out of a Remmy hammergun. Some loss of "barrel substance" of course as old Gough said right before his paraphrastic tribute to Bobby Burns: "The blue is but the barrel's tint; the steel's the thing for a' that." I'm sticking with bp pressures (5Kpsi).

Jim,
I saw that gun a few minutes after it was posted. It looks about like several I've seen. There were two refinished damascus Lefevers on Gunbroker last week that looked torched with blued actions, barrels, and nice refinished wood. No reserve price. I bid on them just to see what would happen. Kept bid low enough that I knew the seller would never let them go at those bids. The same guy bought both of them for about 1400.00 each. I guess he was buying his own stuff, or protecting someone else. I am interested in a couple of guns available over the internet, but I haven't had any dealings with the shops that have the ones I am looking at. I am pretty sure I have seen negative comments about one dealer in particular. If a seller doesn't respond to e-mails with specific questions, that bothers me.
Silvers has pointed me toward a couple shops. I appreciate the help.
